I Used To Be The Parent You Are Right Now
Family coach. Podcast host. Father. And someone who had to learn all of this the hard way.
Growing up, my biggest dream wasnβt fame or fortune. It was simple: be a great dad, have a great family, create a home filled with love. Thatβs all I ever wanted.
But there was one huge problem. I didnβt have the tools to make it happen.
When I became a dad in 2005, I was not the man you see on my videos or hear on my podcast. I had hopes, dreams β and an empty toolbox.
β Angry outbursts one day, avoidant the next.
β Quick to react. Harsh with discipline.
β Then came the guilt. The confusion.
β Painful arguments with Danielle.
β I felt lost. Drowning in the chaos of family life.
But I believed there had to be a better way. A smarter, kinder, more emotionally intelligent way to parent. And I was determined to find it.
So I went looking. I read everything β parenting psychology, child development, brain science, emotional intelligence, attachment theory. I was obsessed.
But the real learning didnβt come from books. It came from people.
Living rooms. Kitchen tables. Tear-stained stories whispered so the kids couldnβt hear. I got invited into the messy, sacred spaces of real family life β into the pain, the chaos, the beauty.
I sat with burned-out moms and frustrated dads. I spent time with screen-addicted, anxious, defiant teenagers β and with thriving kids, joyful kids, leaders in the making.
And through it all, I learned one thing: the most connected, grounded parents arenβt that way because theyβre perfect or naturally calm. They just got their hands on the right tools β and used them.
When I brought those tools into my own home, everything changed. First I changed. Then my kids did. Our once-chaotic home became a place of peace. Parenting stopped feeling like an endless battle β and started feeling like a meaningful adventure.
My kids listened. We connected. Danielle and I got on the same page. Our home felt like a team.
I realized: there are millions of parents exactly where I used to be. And I could help.
Today, over 2 million parents follow my work. My videos reach tens of millions every month. My podcast ranks in the top charts worldwide. Iβve coached CEOs, therapists, school principals β and thousands of families who just needed someone to hand them the right tools.
My book, The EQ Parent, is coming from Zondervan Publishing in late 2026.
But what Iβm most proud of? The homes that changed. The parents who stopped yelling. The kids who came back. The families who became teams.
Thatβs why I do this.
